Forty-eight hours out from Thanksgiving, with the whole family driving in, the freezer column quit holding temperature and I started moving food to the neighbours. Someone was at the house before nine the following morning, found the defrost circuit had failed, and fitted a genuine Sub-Zero part instead of whatever was nearest to hand. The number he gave me on the phone was the number on the invoice — I checked, because nobody ever is.

The inner glass on our Wolf 48-inch oven door had delaminated and gone permanently fogged — you could not see a roast through it at all. I had assumed I was buying a whole new door, and said so; he told me the pane on its own was available and went and sourced the right one. Fitted a week later, clear as new, and a small fraction of what I had braced for.

A spider had nested inside the venturi on one of the cooktop burners. That was it — the entire problem. He cleared it out, ran every burner to be sure, and told me flatly that nothing needed replacing, when he could just as easily have written up a set of igniters and I would never have known otherwise. Paid the diagnostic and that was the end of it.

Both visits he turned up roughly forty minutes past the end of the window and neither time did anyone call to tell me, which is the only reason this is four stars and not five. That said, what he found mattered: the condenser coil was matted solid with hair from our two dogs and the compressor had been fighting it for months. He cleaned it properly, showed me where to get at it myself, and set us on a schedule. I am fairly certain that saved us a compressor and a very different bill.

Third company we called about the Cove, and the only one who bothered to find the actual blockage in the drain path — the previous two had both moved straight to quoting a new pump. He told me the $89 diagnostic before he opened his bag and never went past it. Floor stayed covered the whole time he was working, which our hardwood was grateful for.

Booked it on a Saturday and it was repaired Monday afternoon — a failed thermostat in the undercounter beverage centre, which had let everything inside sit at room temperature for a week. Quiet, quick, and he put the kitchen back exactly the way he found it, stools and all. No drama, which is all I was after.
